Even Wood Deserves A Second Chance

What Is Reclaimed Wood?

  • Salvaged History: Reclaimed wood is repurposed from old buildings, barns, factories, or warehouses. It often exhibits unique textures, character marks, and patinas that new wood simply can’t match.
  • Sustainable Choice: By reusing wood that might otherwise end up as waste, you contribute to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly practice, reducing the demand for freshly harvested lumber.

What to Expect: The Unique Character of Reclaimed Wood

What to Expect: The Unique Character of Reclaimed Wood

At Doug and Cristy Designs, we take pride in crafting furniture from reclaimed wood, giving each piece a story and character that can’t be replicated. Reclaimed wood carries history in every grain, knot, and imperfection. These natural and man-made markings are part of its charm and contribute to the authenticity of our products.

Common Characteristics of Reclaimed Wood:

  1. Knots & Nail Holes: Knots add rustic beauty, while nail holes tell the story of the wood’s past life. Some pieces may contain filled or unfilled nail holes, enhancing the reclaimed aesthetic.
  2. Variations in Color & Grain: Because reclaimed wood comes from different sources, no two boards are exactly alike. Expect variations in tone, grain patterns, and occasional saw marks that add depth and uniqueness to your piece.
  3. Cracks & Splits: Small cracks and splits are common in reclaimed wood, showing the natural aging process. While we ensure structural integrity, these elements contribute to the authentic, timeworn look.
  4. Natural Distressing & Weathering: Some boards may have slight gouges, uneven edges, or worn surfaces, created by years of use and exposure. We carefully balance these features to maintain durability while preserving the wood’s character.
  5. Old Fastener & Hardware Marks: Remnants of previous hardware, such as screw holes or small metal stains, may be visible. These marks remind us of the wood’s history and bring a one-of-a-kind charm to your furniture.

Our Craftsmanship Guarantee:

While we celebrate the character of reclaimed wood, we take great care in ensuring that every product meets our quality standards. We reinforce and finish each piece with craftsmanship that ensures both beauty and durability.

Your furniture is more than just a piece of decor—it’s a piece of history, made to be cherished for generations. Thank you for choosing sustainable craftsmanship that tells a story.

Caring for Your Reclaimed Wood Furniture

To keep your reclaimed wood furniture looking its best, simply clean it with a damp cloth. We recommend avoiding harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the wood over time.

While we don’t offer additional sealing services, you can apply a wood sealer or polyurethane finish if you’d like extra protection. Please note that adding a finish will deepen the color of the wood and may change its natural look, so be sure to test a small area first to ensure you're happy with the result.

Sometimes, during shipping, a fully assembled reclaimed wood table may experience jolts and bumps, and climate changes can also cause slight misalignment—just like any settling wooden furniture. This can be easily adjusted by shimming with felt pads to ensure perfect stability. Felt pads are available upon request.
